Next Neo1973 revision may use the SMedia Glamo3362 GPU

While reading the OpenMoko commitlog I noticed this patch by Harald 'laforge' Welte. It updates the initialization routines for the GTA02 (the next Neo1973 hardware revision, Phase 1+ and 2) and creates a driver stub for a chip called 'SMedia Glamo3362'.
According to the manufacturer's site and datasheet, the Glamo3362 is the VGA variant of the 3370 which supports 2D/3D accelleration and MPEG4 en-/decoding (it also has a camera interface, which probably won't be used in the Neo1973).
The 2D engine supports HW-based alpha blended blitting, scaling and geometry drawing. The 3D acceleration is OpenGL ES 1.1 compliant. OpenGL ES 1.1 was defined based on OpenGL 1.5, so it should support features similar to a GeForce FX (of course the fillrate is lower).
OpenGL applications using the full API would need to be ported to OpenGL ES, but that doesn't seem too hard. So we may finally see the current SuperTux milestone on the Neo!

It will be great if NEO1973 has camera. Now manifacurers put cameras in their cheap models... yes cameras in these models are poor, but howsoever they have cameras. NEO 1973 seems to be "SMART phone" .... so it will be bad if NEO hasn't camera. It also will be great if it has second camera for video comunication.
P.S. Excuse my English is not very well.
This is great news! One of
Mark Achee (not verified) — Mon, 2007-05-28 04:42This is great news! One of the things that disappointed me about the Neo1973 was the doubt that it would be able to play videos at true 640x480. I hope that with this GPU it becomes possible!
